Butler 8 Big Brook Field Trip
Big Brook Preserve in Colts Neck NJ is a creek that runs through fossil beds from the Cretaceous period. Students from Butler 8 spent the day searching for fossils in the creek. The trip was shared with a Social Studies trip to the Intrepid Museum in New York City so that half the students went to each place on different days. Despite cold temperatures, rain, and high water the students were enthusiastically wading to find fossilized sharks' teeth, brachiopods, shells and squid pens from 65 million years ago. Each student was allowed to take home five of the fossils they found.
